Day 11: Arenal Volcano/Sarapiquí

Highlight of the Day:

After an early breakfast, we are leaving Arenal Volcano at around 7:30 am.
We crossed the northern plains leading to the rich rain forests of Sarapiquí.
The bus stopped at a lizard sighting place where many large orange males and green females sitting on tree branches.
A little later we arrived at XXXXXX. Floating or Rafting was originally planned on the Sarapiquí River, an area affected by the recent earthquake. Since part of the whole river was rerouted, this was an alternate location.

Our family was on one raft, together with one river nature guide.

We saw
Ringed Kingfisher
(tiny) American Picnic Kingfisher
Bare throated Tiger Heron (2 on one tree)
Howler monkeys
Osprey
Lizards on trees
Vultures

It was very hot on the boat, so all of us – at least from our raft – decided to take the offer of “dipping” into the water. This was absolute fun…. Floating in the water in the life jacket. The girls were giggling, my parents had great fun as well. After this refreshment, we were ready for some sun – but then the rain started. It poured and poured. While raining, we heard more howler monkeys.

For lunch, we stopped at La Quinta, a sustainable eco hotel. The buffet offered a variety of local dishes, everything I tasted was delicious. Later, we checked into Sueño Azul, a working hacienda and spa.
